Motivation That Lead Me to the Post about Crime Prevention

Posted by Kian, Ting

The motivation behind why I contribute my time into writing about crime prevention is that I have had the experience of a few unfortunate events, and they are as listed below, and they are all true incidents.

1)     My Car got Broken Into
2)     Two of My Neighbors got Rob
3)     I stay in a Robbery Infested Neighborhood
4)     I watched a Disturbing Video of a Battered Woman

1)     My Car got Broken Into

Recently I just had my car broken into, I parked my car just in front of my house as illustrated by the diagram below, can you imagine, the thief have the guts to break in to my car in front of my house.

I am driving a beat up Proton Iswara, there is no alarm system nor any central lock. The thief broken in and ransacked the whole car, the lock of the driver side door have been pry open, the lock (where we use to insert the key) is left dangling at the car door. My clothes and all my belonging from the car’s booth is scattered all along the road in front of my house.

I tried to call the police by dialing 999, there were no one to pick up my call, for the first two attempts of my calls, it rang until it got disconnected, it is only the third attempt that my call got through, could you imagine if this is an emergency situation, what would happen to us and our love ones?

When I got the answer from the other end of the phone line, I was ready to do the reporting but the first question that the police officer asked me was what area is my house in, I told them the area, then they said I must report to the nearest police station in my area and they went on to give me the address of the police station.

I drove to the nearest police station at approximately 7.45 a.m, the police woman in the office have asked me to have a seat, she said that they are rushing some paper work, and at approximately 9 a.m. in the morning they are ready to take my police report, to finish off the police report they have to do finger printing and also taking some photo on the affected areas of my car, but the crime investigation officer is not yet in the office, they have ask me to wait and that I can go and have my break fast, and if the inspector reached the office they would call me, so at about approximately about 11 a.m. I still haven’t got any call from the police, waiting at the coffee shop impatiently I went back to the police station to enquire about the inspection of fingerprints on my car.

The police then told me to drive to another block where there is a department for this sort of investigation and that  I should drive my car to the building to have it inspected, so I went there and found the inspector, he took pictures of the affected areas of my car but he didn’t take any finger prints, I proceed to ask why is that so, he said that finger prints can only be taken from the smooth and shiny surfaces, and most of the dash board in my are is rough rubbery surface, they cannot identify any finger prints so no point trying. He did a demo by brushing the finger print detection brush on my dash board but nothing is revealed, and he had ask me to touch the shiny surface at the bonnet of my car, and proceed to brush it and a dark fingerprint mark appeared.

So remember don’t simply touch the smooth shiny surfaces of crime scenes, because it would contaminate the fingerprints of the culprits.

2)     Two of My Neighbors got Rob

I stay in Malaysia, unlike US our landed property is mostly called “Teres housese” which is what is as depicted by the picture below, our house are joined together not separate.

My house is in the middle of the lot, so imagine if I say 2 of my neighbors got robbed, it means the two houses both at my right and left side have been robbed before. The first incident happened to my neighbor at my right hand side, he is a young tall man, one day he came home late from work at about 2a.m and had parked his car at the left hand side of the road. He stepped out of his car from the driver seat (which is on the right hand side of the car) , and was going to the back seat to take his lap top bag, when suddenly a robber holding a helmet came speeding towards my neighbor, un prepared and shocked my neighbor stood up was frozen (as if an animal that is about to be road killed), the robber rammed the helmet to his head, rendering him semi conscious and in pain. The robber grabbed his bag and sped off. My neighbor have six stitched on his forehead.

The incident happen to my Malay lady neighbor on the left side of my house. She woke up routinely at 6am for work, as usual she always park out side of her house. As she opened the car door of, suddenly a robber appeared from no where and hold a Parang Knife (equivalent to the size MASHEDY knife in US, the image below illustrates the size of the Parang), he asked my neighbor to remain quiet else he would slash her, and ask her to give him her hand bag. It was just in front of her house, imagine if he had ask my neighbor to let him enter her house, what would happen to her daughter and family members.

3)     I stay in a Robbery Infested Neighborhood

There have already been a lot of broke in, robbery, and stealing crime activities in my neighbor hood you can even find this in YouTube

And the list goes on and on.

4)     I watched a Disturbing Video of a Battered Woman

I am not much of a social networking person, not much of a facebooker, if I may put it that way. But my wife is addicted to it, if you cant beat them why not join them, so one day I decide to see what is my wife doing at the Facebook realm, I sat beside to see what she was doing. She likes to look at the funny videos posted by people on the social web site. So I watch together with her we were laughing and it is great after a hard days work.

Then there was a post by a friend of hers, the post was written in Chinese I couldn’t read, it is something about the Japanese Porn production team forcing a girl to do something. She launched the video, it started with a few naked man just wearing underwear walking around. And a naked lady sitting at the floor, she was crying or something. One of the man with a bottle of what seem to be red wine, pulled the hair of this young woman and forced her to drink the whole bottle of red wine, he literally forced it into her mouth, bear in mind it is a glass bottle, forcing it in to the mouth might break some teeth.

The rest starting grabbing her hair and start slapping her around beating her, some kicked her, some touched her and molested her, she was crying and there is nothing she can do, my wife proceed to log this as an abuse in the face book, the face book team proceed to remove it form the site.

I ask my wife why not post this to the CNN, so the whole world know about this, my wife always the wise one, said that there is nothing we can do, and CNN is a giant, wouldn’t they already know about this, but refuse to report about it, and I thought it might be true, being a Chinese who always have the values of protecting one’s family, reporting this, might bring back some backlash, what if the people in the video start to look for the source of the report, what if they track it to my family. Those were the advise of my wife.

The whole video really disturbed me, I couldn’t sleep the night I had watched it, and for the whole week I felt sick at evil the things that human beings are capable of doing. I thought what if this happens to one of my family members, what it this happen to one of my love ones, I would surely go amok and seek for justice using my own way. I was furious and angry about the whole thing that happened in the video clip, how could this happen in this age.

All the 5 incidents is enough to get me up to my threshold of tolerance and I will dedicate my time to write about crime prevention, yes think positive is good and it makes your happy, but you would have to be a realist to protect your self and family. The police force have limited head count, and they do not have the whole country under their radar. We as citizens and family member, and as people living in the neighbor hood have also the responsibility to ensure every one is safe.
